A small crowd gathered together quietly in the dark of last Friday morning. The reason? To surprise Jean Northey on her last day at work after 39 years as office manager at English Martyrs! Last July, Jean had encouraged, coaxed, cheered and supported 16 young people as they walked in pilgrimage along St. Cuthbert's Way. Now, as a sign of their appreciation, some of them had turned out at 7.30 a.m. on a bitterly cold morning to return that support as Jean began her final walk into school. It wasn't quite 100 km this time but the camaraderie was just the same and Jean's delight at seeing them was plain for all to see. But Jean's link with English Martyrs and its students is far from over as she intends to join us for next year's pilgrimage, this time along St. Oswald's Way. Go Jean!
