Students from English Martyrs are trying to gain their school fairtrade status. Part of this is to publicise fair trade to the wider community so, on a cold Wednesday in February, a group of them staffed a tombola stall in Tesco, handing out leaflets and encouraging passers-by to win a wide variety of fair-trade goods. We have since repeated this at ASDA and managed to raise around £200 in total and hopefully the awareness of the good people of Hartlepool!

Once a month the ladies of St Cuthbert's Church to prepare soup for the congregation to enjoy after mass. This Friday eight students from English Martyrs School belonging to John Boste House came along to help out. They set the tables, cut some bread, made some soup and then served it to the congregation in the parish centre after Mass. St Cuthbert's Church are the parish linked to John Boste House and this is the very first time that the two have had the opportunity to work together on something.

What a great night! February 2nd saw us host our very first Winter BBQ held at St Mary's Church on the Headland and so many people turned up playing their part in a very successful evening. We had a few fun games in the garden before things kicked off then went into our prayer service around the fire . The wind blowing a gale around us may have put a dampner on the candelit parade we had planned but everyone played their part in the service singing along, writing down their hopes, giving out hearts or reading the gospel.

Once the service was over it was time to dish out the BBQ food which had been cooking away for us all during the service and to enjoy putting marshmallows over the fire while the rest enjoyed Brownies with Custard... yum! Finally we had the competition for the best designed Hawaiian Shirt prize going to Beth Allison even if everybody else did share her prize and Jeremy became a little too attached to the Pineapple!
